Visiting The Achiltibuie Garden

If you've visited us before 2008, please note that we now have a new location within Achiltibuie. The old building which housed the Hydroponicum and its café is closed; our new growing house is situated nearby, whilst our office is in the township of Altandhu.

For directions on how to reach us, please click here.

Our Keder greenhouse and gardens are now officially closed for 2011. We're usually working there on weekday mornings, however, so please give us a ring or send us an email if you'd like to visit us, buy our popular hydroponic growing kits or buy tasty, fresh produce.

Approximate opening hours:
Monday 10am - 12.30pm
Tuesday 10am - 12.30pm
Wednesday 2.30pm - 3.30pm
Thursday 10am - 12.30pm
Friday 10am - 12.30pm

If you do come to see us, please bear in mind that we have a much reduced display over the winter months because of the short day-length here. You'll still be able to buy salads and veggies either directly from us or from our local shops, Achiltibuie Stores and Polbain Stores.

Power for the Keder greenhouse is supplied by a micro wind turbine which runs the pumps via a bank of batteries. All the hydroponics systems are supplied with water from our harvested rainwater store. If you are interested in running your own greenhouse without having to rely on mains services, it's certainly worth coming to see us! We have spent a lot of time sourcing suitable pumps and equipment to be able to do this and are happy to talk to you about what we've done.
Outdoors, you can see how our vegetable garden is coming along with lots of different veg planted. We're also starting work on our ornamental garden which will feature a range of shrubs, perennials and annuals and is planned to give colour and interest throughout the year.

You're welcome to explore the croft with its abundance of interesting flora and fauna - take a stroll down to the shore and you can have a look at our new orchard as well as seeing how our shelter belt trees are progressing. You might even come across our resident geese. It can be a bit muddy on the croft if it's been raining, so don't forget your wellies!

We don't have a formal admission fee to see our growing house and garden areas, but would welcome a donation of £1 per person towards our time showing you round.

We split our time between our office in Altandhu and the Garden on its croft site in Achiltibuie. The office in Altandhu is open from 10am - 3pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and visitors are welcome to call in. Most of our stock is stored there, although we carry a limited number of hydroponic growing kits and supplies at The Garden site in Achiltibuie. If you have a shopping list, you may find it more convenient to contact the office and order in advance. Items can be collected from either the office in Altandhu where you can pay by credit card, cash or cheque or from The Garden in Achiltibuie where we can accept cash or cheque. From either location, you can also arrange to have your order sent to your home address - a great idea if you're short of space in the car!
